Former Councilwoman Crayton organizes barbecue for needy veterans

COLUMBIA — Memorial Day is a time to honor American veterans, including homeless or disabled veterans who frequently go unrecognized.

Former First Ward Councilwoman Almeta Crayton is focusing on this less-visible group of veterans by hosting a barbecue in their honor from noon to 5 p.m. on May 31 at Saint Luke United Methodist Church, 204 E. Ash St. The event will take place on the parking lot or in the building, depending on the weather.

In previous years, Crayton held the event at St. Francis House, which helped her reach out to homeless veterans who would normally be difficult to contact because of their lack of documentation.

This year, Crayton will be hosting the event independently. She said she needs volunteer support to help invite veterans who are homeless, disabled or otherwise in need. She also needs volunteers for the preparation and execution of the event.

Crayton plans to begin cooking around 8:30 a.m. to have the food — including chicken, hot dogs and pork steaks — ready to serve by noon. Crayton said she still needs dessert and drink donations.
