COLUMBIA — Organizers of the Pedaler’s Jamboree this weekend promise a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of live music along a stretch of the cross-state Katy Trail.
- Novice and experienced cyclists gathered at Flat Branch Park on Saturday morning to kick off the Pedaler’s Jamboree, a two-day bike ride along the Katy Trail with several live music events along the way.
Mike Denehy, series director of Off Track Events and creator of the jamboree, said people participating in the ride can start in Columbia, Jefferson City or Sedalia then ride to Boonville for the signature event on Saturday afternoon.
About 400 people have pre-registered, and Denehy expects as many as 800 to participate.
“I think that the draw is community celebrations and live music all along the route,” Denehy said, adding that he expects the most activity in river towns between Columbia and Boonville. A schedule of music and other events is available at the jamboree Web site.
The first Pedaler’s Jamboree last year attracted 400.
“I drew up the idea, and people got really excited about it,” Denehy said.
Online registration is closed, but riders can sign up Saturday morning. Riders who want to start in Columbia can register between 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Bar and Grill, 402 E. Broadway. The cost for adults is $35, but those younger than 16 can join in for free.
Four bands will make up the feature concert starting around 2 p.m. at Frederick T. Kemper Park in Boonville. The main band, Split Lip Rayfield from Kansas, will play around 6:30 p.m., Denehy said.
The jamboree will coincide with the Katy Trail Celebration Ride and Torch Relay, which begins Friday and continues through Wednesday. That event marks the 20th anniversary of the Katy Trail.
