COLUMBIA — Emergency crews attempted to revive a man pulled out of Stephens Lake Monday evening, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.
The man was found underwater and was pulled from the lake. People on the scene began performing CPR. At 7:11 p.m., fire crews arrived and found Columbia Police officers continuing CPR on the man, who was not breathing and had no pulse, according to the release.
According to the Missourian reporter, medical personnel attempted to revive the man using chest compressions and a defibrillator before he was put into an ambulance. The man, approximately 40 years old, was taken to University Hospital Level One Trauma Center, according to the release.
The man's condition — as well as how long or why he was underwater — is unknown.
Onlookers appeared distraught, and as emergency crews arrived, people began leaving the park, which had been full of families celebrating Memorial Day. Police officers escorted several upset children to their families' cars.
In August 2008, a 17-year-old boy drowned in Stephens Lake, the first death to occur there since the park opened in 2004, according to previous Missourian reports.
