COLUMBIA — An employee was trapped in a lower-level elevator of Boone County National Bank when a small fire broke out in the mechanical room around 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Columbia Fire Department news release.
An elevator motor malfunction caused a small fire, which was quickly extinguished upon the arrival of Columbia Fire Department, according to the release. The light smoke caused by the fire tripped the smoke detector and activated the fire alarm, which caused the elevator to return to the ground floor. As a safety feature, the elevator did not open, trapping Nathan Keathley.
The smoke was removed from the lower level of the bank with the use of electric fans. Fire Department investigators determined that the fire was caused by the failure of one of the elevator control motors.
Keathley was successfully removed from the elevator with no injuries. Damage is estimated at $5,000, according to the release.
