PrintNo matter how famous DeMarre Carroll may become in the NBA, it is important for him to give back.
DeMarre Carroll’s Next Level Basketball Camp has been in session since June 7 and will end June 11. It is currently being held at Midwest Sports Academy. The name of Carroll’s camp shows the hope he has for children to succeed and make it to that next level.
“That’s what I got on my camp shirt, DeMarre’s Next Level Basketball Camp. They [kids] will be in middle school and think about the NBA. If they are about being the best at their level, then the NBA will find them. I just want them to get to the best of their level and be the best player on their team.”
After his first year in the NBA, Carroll uses his knowledge of the game at pro level and applies it to his camp. One of the biggest lessons he uses at his camp is the way he communicates with the kids.
“You can’t communicate with people the same. Everybody’s different. You have to holler at some people, you have to take it easy with some people. You have to learn to communicate with these kids, because you can’t communicate with all these kids the same.”
His teaching seems to be very effective. Many kids enjoy their time at camp and love learning from Carroll.
“He’s really nice and cool,” says Sean Koetting, an 11-year-old camper.
With hopes of someday making it to the NBA, Koetting has the advice for kids his age “to keep trying.” Koetting believes this camp will help guide him to better things in the future and “to better places, both physical and mental places.”
Carroll plans on continuing his camps, and hopes it grows. He is trying to get a bigger location for the next camp.
“There’s a lot of professional players that come back and give to the community, and I feel like that’s our job. We are blessed to make it to the NBA or NFL, and we should come back and give back to these kids because we were once in their position.”
Following the end of this camp on Friday, Carroll and his staff will be heading to Birmingham, Ala. for his next two camp sessions.

I am so glad to read that DeMarre is remaining humble like I knew he would. I do wonder how does one find out about camps like this? I mean this story is out on the day that the camp ends. Where was this camp promoted?
