LYNDON, Kan. — A preliminary hearing in the case of a former Columbia city official charged with killing four family members in Kansas has been delayed.
The hearing in the murder case against Kraig Kahler was scheduled for June 22 to 23 in Osage County District Court.
The Columbia Tribune reported Tuesday that the hearing was delayed until Aug. 19 to 20 because Kahler's attorneys needed more time to review 3,500 pages of new discovery documents.
Kahler faces capital murder charges in the deaths of his wife, 44-year-old Karen Kahler; his daughters, 18-year-old Emily and 16-year-old Lauren; and his grandmother-in-law, 89-year-old Dorothy Wight. The shootings happened Nov. 28, 2009, at Wight's home in Burlingame, Kan.
During the August hearing, Kahler's 11-year-old son, Sean, will testify by remote television. He was able to escape uninjured during the shootings.
