COLUMBIA – Centro Latino plans to host a vegan soul food and movie night at 5:30 p.m. Sunday* at Cafe Berlin to benefit Comedor Popular.
Comedor Popular, or the "peoples' diner," is aimed at fighting obesity. The community diner will include hot vegan meals, cooking classes, wellness and obesity prevention programs and a retail shop selling seasonal produce.
Centro Latino recently obtained building permits to start construction on the building at 609 N. Garth St. Landlord Dudley Roth said he respects Centro Latino's mission.
"No doubt it will dramatically improve the neighborhood," Dudley said.
Eduardo Crespi, the director and founder of Centro Latino, will be at the event.
Crespi said he is looking for building contractors to participate in the construction process.
