After weeks of confusion, chaos and speculation about conference realignment, MU has announced it will stay in the Big 12. But the announcement came after the Big 12 had already lost Nebraska and Colorado, giving the smaller Big 12 a weaker foundation, according to a Missourian article.
The remaining Big 12 schools, including MU, have pledged to stay in the conference if debate about conference realignment resurfaces.
By staying in the league, Missouri and the remaining nine Big 12 schools have the potential to grab future television contracts with media giants including Fox and ABC/ESPN. But those contracts are not guaranteed.
Securing television contracts with FOX and ABC/ESPN could be worth $20 million to Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, according to a Missourian article. The other Big 12 teams, including MU, would receive allotted television revenue on a tiered status. This follows the same revenue-sharing formula the conference has been using since the creation of the Big 12.
If the conference isn't happy with its television contracts, it can start negotiations at any time. However, no formal negotiations have been initiated.
Is a nonbinding pledge enough to bring stability back to the Big 12?
