PrintINDEPENDENCE — Gen. David Petraeus is the keynote speaker at a Missouri event marking the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.
Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, was scheduled Monday to address a gathering of Korean War veterans at the Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence. The city is the hometown of President Harry S. Truman, who held office during the war.
The event is sponsored by the Truman Library Institute, a partner of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded the south. The war ended in a stalemate without a formal peace agreement.

I remember that very early Sunday morning (here in the Central Time Zone). I had what was a well-paid part time job "bundling" the sections of the Des Moines Register newspaper into a finished product. The job was then done manually.
Shortly after midnight the presses shut down. We assumed it was a technical problem in the press room, but when the news section again became available to us there was a new headline. Where, people asked, was Korea?
I had no idea how much that new headline would affect our high school classmates, several of whom did not survive the war.
