PrintCOLUMBIA — Mr. Kid Bars, the oldest horse in Missouri, died Tuesday . He was 41.
Kid had been serving as a therapy horse at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center since 1997.
Kid was born in Warrensburg on May 16, 1969, when Richard Nixon was president, man had not yet walked on the moon and the end to the war in Vietnam was still six years away.
When he was 12, he lived in Boonville with Jack and Dianna Shallenburger and their two sons. In 1988, he was a champion barrel racer in the Missouri State Fair.
In a January 2009 Missourian article, Karen Grindler, director of Cedar Creek and Kid's caretaker, said Kid had helped more than 100 children and adults who have autism or other mental or physical challenges since he started working at Cedar Creek. He continued his work up until last week.
According to the previous Missourian article, most horses eat two meals a day, but Kid ate three.
The average horse lives to be between 25 and 30 years old, according to the American Quarter Horse Association.
