Barbara Buffaloe, the sustainability manager for the city of Columbia, is walking the sustainability walk by upgrading her home for maximum efficiency.
She and her husband received a loan from the city to help pay for big improvements, such as upgrading their heating, ventilation and air conditioning to a 96 percent-efficient model.
After they finish their upgrades next month, the Buffaloes will have another energy audit. For each air change per hour reduction they achieve, they’ll receive an $84 rebate from the city, up to $420. They’re participating in the Home Performance with Energy Star Program through Columbia Water and Light.
On Saturday, she addressed the small but important details — sealing gaps around windows.
