PrintCOLUMBIA — Residents interested in the construction of what is set to become one of the tallest structures downtown can get another look at plans for it at Friday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Art.
The committee will meet at 12:15 p.m. in the Community Room of the Walton Building, 300 S. Providence Road, to discuss plans for public art that will adorn the parking garage scheduled to be constructed at Fifth and Walnut streets. During the meeting, members will review public comment on a proposed design by artist Stuart Keeler.
Keeler was selected in March to create a piece of art for the garage, funded by the Percent for Art program. At its June 8 meeting, the committee reviewed four of Keeler's designs and selected one, “Sky Algorithm,” to post for public comment.
In an artist statement, Keeler writes that “Sky Algorithm” will be made of glass panels of different colors, taking hues from Columbia’s skies. Languages of cities sharing the 38th parallel with Columbia will be etched into the panels.
The committee is planning for the piece to appear on the northwest stair tower of the garage, where the majority of people using it are expected to enter and exit.
The time of day would also affect the viewer’s perception of the art. During the day, the etchings on the glass would cast shadows in the stairwell. At night, light from within the garage would make the glass appear to glow.
The committee is set to review comments collected and view images of the design at Friday’s meeting. Upon review, it plans to make a recommendation to the Commission on Cultural Affairs and the City Council.
If the design is approved, Keeler would finalize and begin production on the piece.
