PrintCOLUMBIA — A sugar-substitute production facility will create 612 new jobs and invest $46 million into the Moberly-area economy, Gov. Jay Nixon announced in front of company executives, government officials and community leaders at Moberly Area Community College on Friday.
Mamtek International's plant should be ready this fall, according to Moberly City Manager Andrew Morris. Infrastructure, including water, electrical, sewer and gas lines will need to be brought an area of farmland on North Business 63.
“I think it goes without saying it will have a positive impact,” Morris said. “It’ll have a multiplier effect that I can’t even calculate.”
The state of Missouri awarded $14.4 million in tax credits, $2 million in grant funds, $800,000 for job training and $368,000 in employee recruitment and referral services.
The City of Moberly is providing $37 million for the development of the plant through the sale of bonds and made more than $500,000 available in grants and services. Private investors have provided an additional $8 million.
The economic activity taxes Mamtek will bring will help the City of Moberly improve its aging infrastructure, including water lines, sewer lines and streets, Morris said.
Mamtek International produces Sweet-O Sucralose. The sugar substitute is 600 times sweeter than sugar and is used in a variety of products.
