Missouri among 10 states to get new National Guard outfit

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri is one of 10 states chosen to host a National Guard outfit responsible for responding to homeland security threats.

State and federal officials said Tuesday the Homeland Response Force will be established during the federal government's 2012 fiscal year.

Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton said each of the 10 regional Guard outfits will consist of about 570 personnel able to respond within six to 12 hours to an emergency event.

Gov. Jay Nixon says Missouri's selection could result in as many as 90 new full-time National Guard positions in the state.

Nixon says the new Guard group could respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and other explosive incidents.
