COLUMBIA —It starts with a sting and, as many players attest, grows into an addiction.
A small group of men in Columbia religiously play handball at Wilson's Fitness Center on Forum Boulevard. The men competed in the Show-Me State Games this weekend.
"For them, it's good physically and mentally," Sarah Kohnle said.
And as Susan Schafer laughed, "They need this. There are worse vices out there."
Their husbands, Mark and Dave, respectively, have been playing together for over 30 years.
While other local players have been playing just as long, there is a general feeling that handball is a dying sport.
"Like all dinosaurs, there aren't many of us left," said Kerry Bramon, another regular at Wilson's. "We have to stick together."
