PrintCOLUMBIA — Art enthusiasts in Columbia can view a collection beyond the walls of a gallery or museum by touring the city’s publicly accessible art collection.
Ten completed installments to the collection since 1997 were funded through the Percent for Art program. In the program, 1 percent of the cost of certain capital improvement projects is set aside for the creation of public art at the site.
The following installments are in progress:
- City Hall, second floor interior. Artist: Lampo Leong. Commission: $11,000.
- City Hall, third floor interior. Artist: Chris Morrey. Commission: $11,000.
- Fire Station No. 9. Artist: Glenn Williams. Title of project: "Communitas." Medium: stainless steel. Commission: $14,500.
- Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage. Artist: Stuart Keeler. Commission: $110,00.
Planned projects
- City Hall, fourth floor interior. Local artist. Commission: $11,000.
- City Hall, fifth floor interior. Local artist. Commission: $11,000.

The City Council votes to designate which projects are a fit for the Percent for Art program. *Projects eligible for that designation must be above-ground capital improvements projects that exceed $1 million.
No more than three projects may be initiated during one fiscal year. Ten projects are completed, and six more are planned or in progress.
The art must be in a location that will enhance the public environment and civic pride.
Columbia and Kansas City are the only Missouri cities with a Percent for Art program, according to a previous Missourian article.
A portion of the amount dedicated to each project is designated for maintenance of the artwork. Of the 16 total installments, $556,600 has been set aside for artists’ commissions.
