State auditor job description

The state auditor serves as an independent financial watchdog of Missouri's funds.

The auditor inspects the state's agencies and programs for fraud and waste, making sure they're operating efficiently, economically and accountably. He or she ensures the public funds received and spent by the state are handled responsibly. The state auditor must post-audit all of the state agencies.

The auditor reviews the state's financial statements and the office of the state treasurer, as well as major federal programs of the state. He or she relays the year's audit findings to the governor, Senate and House of Representatives in an annual report.

The state auditor also performs local duties in counties without an auditor.

The state auditor serves a four-year term and earns $107,746 annually.
