PrintSince moving to the United States from Pakistan in 1979, Abdul Akram said he has been living as a “proud Missourian” who was educated at Missouri universities, taught at the University of Central Missouri and sent his children to Missouri colleges.
A Democrat, Akram said he was inspired to run for state auditor while in Jefferson City supporting a friend’s candidacy for a state House seat.

“I saw all these people, and as I was standing in front of the secretary of state’s building, all of a sudden I realized, you know, you came to this country, you have gotten all this education here, this country has been good to you and now you have to do something good for this country, too,” Akram said.
If elected, he said his audits would focus on examining the productivity and cost efficiency of services. He also said he would “bring more sensitivity to the constituents.”
Akram said his business experience and his education have prepared him for the state auditor’s job.
“I am a person who has that zeal to work outside that envelope to deal with things that have never been dealt with before," Akram said. "I’m committed to providing the best service to the customer.”
