PrintThe main role of members of the U.S. House of Representatives is to serve their constituents through the process of writing legislation. Other major responsibilities given to Congress include passing a budget, regulating trade and declaring wars.
Congressional districts are drawn based on population. This contrasts with the Senate, where each state is represented equally by two senators.
There are 435 total representatives; Missouri currently has nine districts. Boone County and Columbia are located in the 9th District. You can check your district on this map.
Members serve two-year terms. There is no term limit.
The salary for both representatives and senators is $174,000.
To be eligible to run, candidates must:
- Be at least 25 years old.
- Be a U.S. citizen for at least seven years.
- Live in the state they plan to represent.
