Mike Vontz describes himself as a “basic voter,” an average guy. Without any political experience to run on, he said his desire to change government is qualification enough.
“I’ve been a Republican since the first time I registered,” he said.

OCCUPATION: Owner of Mike Vontz Handyman since 1992

BACKGROUND: Grew up on a family farm in California. Later worked in oil field refinery construction, computer sales and real estate sales.
Vontz initially became involved in the tea party and decided to become more involved after the government started getting “out of control.” Vontz took his cause to Washington in September 2009 to protest government spending.
“I thought, 'Wow, this will make a difference,'” he said. “It was indescribable. There were so many people there. You could fill several college football stadiums.”
The next day, while watching the local news coverage of the protests, Vontz realized politicians weren’t listening. He decided to run for office himself.
His said his primary goal in running for U.S. Senate is to turn around the economy.
“It’s all the overspending and overtaxing that’s causing the problem,” he said, admitting a lot of government programs would need to be cut to reduce spending. “I’d like to see programs like self-directed retirement, where people set aside their own money for retirement rather than have the government control your funds.”
Vontz said he considers Islam a threat.
“I don’t consider Islam a religion, I consider it a political organization,” he said. “I’m extremely concerned about their desire to seemingly take over the world.”
Vontz hopes the American public will join in his cry for change.
“I’m not going to lie to you to get your vote,” he said. “I don’t desire to be a senator, but I do desire that our government be under control and quit running us into bankruptcy.”
