Winners in the state auditor primary election

What happened: In the Democratic primary race, incumbent Susan Montee defeated challenger Abdul Akram with 90.3 percent of the vote to his 9.7 percent.

In the Republican primary, Tom Schweich defeated Allen Icet with a tighter margin: 58.6 percent to 41.4 percent.

On Nov. 2: Montee and Schweich face Libertarian candidate Charles Baum in the general election. Baum was unopposed in the primary. They are competing for the seat currently held by Montee.

Issues: During the Democratic primary, Montee said making sure the economy is working is one of the most important tasks, which includes handling the federal stimulus money. As the incumbent, Montee said her record proves she will continue to run the office in a professional manner. “I already know that I’ve demonstrated that I can be independent and fair,” she said.

During the GOP primary, Schweich said the number one issue is helping departments manage the federal stimulus money. Other issues include putting an end to any financial corruption within the state government.
