COLUMBIA — An excessive heat warning for parts of Missouri and Illinois, including Columbia, will be in effect until late Thursday.
Peak heat index values during the afternoon and early evening are expected to climb above 105 degrees and as high as 109 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service of St. Louis. An excessive heat warning is issued by the National Weather Service when high temperature and humidity levels are expected to make it feel like it is 105 degrees or greater.
Actual temperatures will be in the lower- to mid-90s, accompanied by high humidity levels. The warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday.
The likelihood of heat-related illnesses increase the longer a dangerous heat wave lasts. Precautions suggested by the National Weather Service include:
- Avoiding poorly-ventilated areas
- Avoiding prolonged work in the sun
- Using air conditioning or keeping your home or apartment well ventilated with fans
- Spending time in an area with working air conditioning to give your body a break from the heat
The National Weather Service advises to not leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, because car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The oil spills, hurricanes, floods, mudslides, and the global heat wave (which have been the cause of many fires, toxic smoke, and deaths) have many searching for answers. The internet is buzzing with articles and excellent blogs. But could it be simply the biblical sequence of God's wrath being poured out upon the earth which is relevant to current events in today's world. What if we are dealing with the wrath of God? Please understand the wrath of God is letting man slip deeper and deeper into the consequences of his own sin. Please visit my website at http://www.revelation-truth.org . Rev. Daniel W. Although I will stand firm and not worship the beast, his image, and take his mark, it'll be a cold day in hell when I start reading your book.
Everyone knows that it's global warming and not global warning that's causing this heat wave...we're having a heat wave...a tropical heat wave...
