PrintCOLUMBIA — The Department of Dermatology at MU Missouri Health Care is planning to host free skin cancer screenings at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.
"Our main goal is outreach and education throughout the state," said MU Health Care Media Coordinator Jeffrey Hoelscher.
Organizers are hoping to combat the disease through early detection.
At the state fair, licensed dermatologists will offer information on skin cancer and provide private cubicles for individuals who have personal concerns about the disease, MU assistant professor of dermatology Nicholas Golda said.
"We want to reassure people that have concerns, and catch possible cases of skin cancer to refer people to the University Hospital or their doctor," Golda also said.
The free screening services are scheduled for Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will be in the MO-Ag Theatre on the fairgrounds, located at 2503 W. 16th St. in Sedalia.
"The goal of this program, which on a local level is part of our commitment to community outreach, is to save lives," said Karen Edison, chair of the department of dermatology at MU Health Care, in a news release.
Both Hoelscher and Golda said they hope for a good turnout, as "the key really is early detection," Hoelscher said.
