PrintCOLUMBIA — Additional fans relieved the dogs in the Central Missouri Humane Society’s temporary shelter from some of the week’s extreme temperatures.
The Humane Society has made a temporary home in the Mid-City Lumber Building at 2105 Paris Road while the permanent shelter at 616 Big Bear Blvd. is renovated. The dogs stay in a metal warehouse without air conditioning.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Monday, predicting that the heat index would reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit and greater. The warning has lasted all week, and it has been extended through 9 p.m. Sunday.
Allison Toth, the shelter's relations coordinator, said the shelter has received three large industrial floor fans from Flat Branch Pub & Brewing and several box fans from the community, all of which have been placed near the dogs.
The shelter replaced the motor in their large fan that stopped spinning Tuesday. It is used to circulate air from an open garage door in the warehouse.
“When you walk in the back, you can definitely feel a difference,” Toth said. “There’s a really nice cross breeze back there.”
Lance Wood, Flat Branch Pub's general manager, said fans in the condenser unit that keep Flat Branch’s perishable items fresh burned out Friday night. The restaurant used the industrial floor fans and a sprinkler system to keep the food cool until the condenser unit could be fixed.
Wood heard about the Humane Society’s heat issues from a previous Missourian article.
“My wife had read the Missourian that morning, and she said ‘Hey, you should donate those fans to the Humane Society,’” he said. “They were very happy to get them, and I think the dogs were pretty happy too.”

I am happy a few people came to help. Now we need to go after the director and skin him alive, for violating these animals and being so thoughtless.
The Animal Welfare Act applies to all not just a select few.
It seems the Boone County Animal Control are on the take or have a special arrangement with somebody over there. As a formal complaint was filed and the Supervisor Molly Faust refused to investigate or even take the complaint, All we received was a bunch of flak from her. She thought it was funny..
I am not going to back off until both of these people are dealt with. The animals do not find it very funny as they die of heat exhaustion and neither do I.
Like the HS director said making a joke out of the conditions, "Well I guess we will just add water." What a jerk

Oh the temperature requirements are: Animals are to be maintained in areas in temperatures ranging from 85.0 degrees Fahrenheit to no colder than 40.0 degrees F.
Even with the fans the Humane Society is in violation with both State and Federal AWA laws.
Joe, the only alternative to housing the dogs in that shed is to give each and every one of them a needle in the paw. Several times a day, the CMHS sends e-mails to its Yahoo volunteer list asking for fosters, who can handle only so many. If you can house the all of those dogs until the remodeled facility opens late next week, please contact CMHS ASAP. Otherwise, you're barking up the wrong tree.
