St. Louis woman dies from heat

ST. LOUIS — The death of a 74-year-old St. Louis woman is being blamed on the heat, bringing to 10 the number of suspected hot weather-related deaths in Missouri.

The city Health Department says the woman died Thursday. Her name was not released.

Hot, humid weather has settled over the Midwest for much of the past several weeks. Temperatures have been in the upper 90s in St. Louis all week. Most of the state is under an extreme heat advisory.

Two people have died in St. Louis, two in Portageville and six in the Kansas City area. Health officials warn that senior citizens and people with other health problems are most at risk.

St. Louis authorities say both people who died in the city had working air conditioners, but did not have them turned on.
