COLUMBIA —Three people remained in serious condition Saturday morning after heavy rains caused a series of accidents on I-70 Friday night.
A total of 22 vehicles were involved in the crashes, according the Columbia Police Department. 11 people received injuries ranging from minor to serious.
- Furnishings from an RV litter the side of Interstate 70 after a multi-vehicle pileup on Aug. 20.
Police said the accidents, stretching over about 300 yards of the highway, were caused by a chain reaction from vehicles following too closely in the rain.
Kim Bowers of Park Hills said her husband, Adam, weaved back and forth to avoid a semi truck that was skidding sideways along the highway behind their vehicle. They watched the approaching truck from their rear view mirrors.
The Bowers' vehicle hit the guardrail in their attempt to avoid the truck.
Adam Bowers left their vehicle to see if he could administer first aid to the driver of an RV that collided with the semi-truck.
Kim Bowers stayed in their minivan with their two small children and called 911.
The family was on the way to a family birthday party for their 3-year-old son, Dakota.
“I thank our lucky stars. That could have easily been us,” Kim Bowers said as she kissed her 1 year-old son, Alex.
Interstate traffic was directed off the highway at the Route 63 exit and redirected back onto the interstate by the Route 63 on ramp.
Police said possible charges are pending, but no arrests or citations have been made. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Driving too fast and too close in pouring rain on pavement that has had road oils floated to the surface by the rains is never a good thing as this shows. Even after years and years of this being said to do not do people will never ever learn. Thank God nobody died.
The recent unfortunate multiple vehicle accident on I-44 that involved two school buses and resulted in two deaths was also the result of following too close for the speed the vehicles were going - on DRY pavement.
Such accidents are usually preventable.
