COLUMBIA- Missouri dropped to 0-2-0 on the season after losing to No. 19 Duke 3-1 the Carolina Nike Classic on Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Missouri got on the board first with a goal from senior midfielder Krista Kruse in the 20th minute.
“It was a throw-in, and [senior forward] Alysha Bonnick flipped it and I just happened to be there and I hit it on in,” Kruse said in a phone interview.
The Blue Devils answered in the second half with two goals in five minutes. Senior defender Molly Lester tied the game in the 50th minute and senior midfielder Marybeth Kreger gave Duke the lead soon thereafter.
“I think we just got too spread out and they capitalized on it,” Missouri coach Bryan Blitz said in a phone interview.
Redshirt freshman forward/midfielder Callie Simpkins added an insurance goal in the 88th minute for Duke.
The Tigers will finish the Carolina Nike Classic by taking on No. 1 North Carolina Sunday at noon.
