COLUMBIA — The Rock Bridge girls volleyball team started the season with a number of firsts Tuesday against visiting Jefferson City.
In the first game of her high school career, Audrey Holt, a freshman middle hitter for the Bruins, scored the first two points of the game with a pair of quick kills.
The effort was part of the Bruins' first win of the season, a 25-22, 25-17 victory over the Jays.
“This win has given us great confidence," Bruins coach Vicki Reimler said. "This year we have an extremely challenging schedule, so confidence in ourselves and our abilities will be key for our success. We are not polished yet, but I am pleased with what I saw at this game."
Holt began playing volleyball two years ago with Club Missouri. Now, as a starter for the Bruins, she said she is honored for the opportunity.
“I was expecting to be nervous about playing varsity this year, but it was a much easier transition than I had expected," Holt said. “They (the team) took me in and really helped me get acclimated.”
Getting acclimated is a lot easier when a sister is right by your side. Emily Holt is a senior at Rock Bridge and a starting outside hitter for the team.
The Holt sisters' mother, Lisa Holt, said she is excited about this season and seeing her daughters play side by side.
“They have never played together before. This is really fun for us," Lisa Holt said. “We have always had conflicting schedules between the two girls with their involvement in volleyball, basketball and soccer for Audrey."
Rock Bridge enjoyed a large turnout for its season-opener. The bleachers were full of parents, siblings and friends, creating a loud and intimidating atmosphere.
“Theses games are always fun and exciting,” said West Wilson, a sophomore football player at Rock Bridge. He said he enjoys sticking around after practice to watch volleyball.
“During the big games, people like to come out and show their support and be loud,” Wilson said.
Rock Bridge plays next at 1 p.m. Saturday in a home match against Ozark.
