Kansas City suburb to add 'speeder' cameras

SUGAR CREEK — A Kansas City suburb will become the first in northwestern Missouri to install cameras aimed at catching speeders.

Aldermen in the Jackson County community of Sugar Creek have unanimously approved using the camera, which is expected to arrive in about six weeks.

Herb Soule, Sugar Creek's police chief, says he knows he will be criticized by some for using the camera. But he says the small town of about 4,000 people that has only 17 officers can't patrol a four-lane highway that borders its eastern edge.

The camera will calculate a vehicle's speed and take a picture of the license plate.

The Kansas City Star reports that any infraction will be considered a nonmoving violation because an officer did not see it. Fines will be based on a sliding scale, depending on speed and other factors.
