PrintAs a result of this summer's salmonella scare, farmers Dustin and Austin Stanton have been selling out of their eggs at the Columbia Farmers' Market the last two weekends, a Monday report from the Missourian said.
The salmonella outbreak began in May, and Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, administered a recall in mid-August. According to a New York Times article, the company had dealt with work environment problems before. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration created new guidelines that apply to companies with 50,000 or more laying hens — a description that fits Wright County Egg.

The rules, which the FDA said could prevent up to 79,000 illnesses and 30 deaths per year, deal with rodent and pest control, cleaning of poultry houses that have tested positive for salmonella and refrigeration methods.
Under the ordinance passed in Columbia in February, residents are allowed to keep up to six chickens at a time, and the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture has held one of two "Yard to Skillet" workshops on slaughtering and preparing chickens. The next one is Sept. 11.
