KANSAS CITY — A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled this week at a south Kansas City project to build a privately developed plant where non-nuclear parts for nuclear weapons will be built.
The facility being built for Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies will employ 2,100 people and replaces the Honeywell plant at the Bannister Federal Complex. That plant produces 85 percent of the non-nuclear parts that go into a typical weapon.
The Kansas City Star reports that another 1,500 construction workers also will be needed to build the 1.5 million-square-foot campus.
Because the new plant is a private development, it will be on the local tax rolls, and is expected to generate $5.2 million annually in local property tax revenue when it's fully operational.
