PrintCOLUMBIA — An unexpected speed bump slowed Columbia City Council proceedings on a prominent public works project Tuesday night.
The City Council tabled pedestrian improvements to the intersection of Providence Road and Business Loop 70 after proper procedure was not followed.
The issue was put off because the land holders near the intersection were not given proper notification that it would be on Tuesday's council agenda.
The intersection does not currently have any pedestrian signals and does not have sidewalks at every corner.
"The goal here is primarily improved pedestrian safety at this intersection," City Manager Bill Watkins said. "It has a lot of kids from Hickman High who cross (in) all directions."
Sharon Lynch, who is a trustee for the land on the northwest corner of the intersection, testified that the land owners in the area were not properly informed of tonight's meeting. She said she only found out about it because she read it in the newspaper.
After her testimony, Mayor Bob McDavid asked whether notification was given in this case. Public Works Director John Glascock said that did not appear to be the case.
The issue will be taken up again at the council's Oct. 4 meeting.
