COLUMBIA — The preliminary hearing for James Kraig Kahler, the former Columbia Water and Light director who is charged with the shooting deaths of four family members, has been rescheduled for Oct. 25-26. The hearing will be held in Osage County, Kan.
The hearing was originally scheduled for Aug. 19-20, but the defense argued that the state had not given it all the information it required. This is the second time the hearing has been delayed.
James Kraig Kahler is charged with a single count of capital murder in the shootings of his wife, Karen Kahler, 44; his daughters, Emily Kahler, 18, and Lauren Kahler, 16; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Wight, 89. The shootings happened in Topeka, Kan., on Nov. 28, 2009. His son, Sean Kahler, 11, was at the home but fled uninjured. He is expected to testify at the preliminary hearing.
