PrintCOLUMBIA — School officials want to have a conversation with Columbians about the achievement gap.
The Columbia School Board met in a special session Thursday to discuss the topic of its upcoming World Cafe. The board plans to host the World Cafe sometime in October.
The Columbia School Board also discussed the timeline and priorities for the opening of Columbia’s third comprehensive high school, set to open in August 2013.
The next steps involve the future freshman class’ selection of the school’s mascot and the school colors in late September and the board’s approval of the decision in October.
The World Cafe is a series of community discussions held by the board to foster conversation about issues affecting Columbia schools. This will be the second World Cafe. The first was held on Dec. 3 in 2009.
The board also leads new idea discussions for the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, the five-year outline of the district’s mission, vision, values and objectives.
The focus of the upcoming World Cafe is addressing the achievement gap and disparities in the district.
Superintendent Chris Belcher said he wants the World Cafe to deal with how to provide meals and connections to social services to students who need them.
