Stephens College dropped its conference opener Tuesday night to visiting Hannibal-LaGrange, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17.
After the match, head coach Shane McAfee said the team needed to get the ball to senior middle hitter Courtney Hafenstein more often, because Hannibal-LaGrange was not defending her well.
“We need her to have twice as many swings, and she doesn’t get the swings unless she gets the passes to the setter and the setter gets the ball to her,” McAfee said. “It’s a vicious circle.”
But McAfee wasn’t too disappointed with the loss, saying that his team played hard and was competitive.
“It would have been nice to win a game, or push it to five, or win the match,” McAfee said. “That’s always nice, but that’s not a bad team. It’s not like we just rolled over.”
Hannibal-LaGrange swept Stephens in both matches last season, and finished the season 16-19.
The loss dropped the Stars to 5-5 on the season. They return to action on the road at 7 p.m. Friday against American Midwest Conference opponent McKendree.
