COLUMBIA — Derrick Washington's defense attorney, Christopher Slusher, stood alone before Boone County Circuit Court Judge Deborah Daniels on Wednesday afternoon.
Slusher nodded his head as Daniels verified his request to waive formal arraignment and enter a plea of not guilty on Washington's behalf to a Class C felony charge of deviate sexual assault.
Neither Washington nor Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Hayes attended the session.
Washington is accused of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in June at the Campus View apartment complex.
"I was sexually assaulted by him. ... I am pressing criminal charges," the woman wrote in court documents, as previously reported by the Missourian. "I fear physical retaliation."
If found guilty, Washington could face up to seven years in jail.
A hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Boone County Courthouse on a motion to revoke the $4,500 bond Washington posted on Aug. 30.
The state filed the motion on Sept. 14.
Slusher, of Holder, Susan and Slusher, said his client will be present at Thursday's hearing.
Washington also faces charges of third-degree domestic assault, a misdemeanor, after allegedly striking his ex-girlfriend several times in the face with his fist.
A court hearing on that charge is scheduled on Monday.
