COLUMBIA — A cyclist was hit by a car at the intersection of College and University avenues on Friday as she attempted to cross College Avenue.
The accident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. as the cyclist crossed from west to east, according to multiple eyewitnesses. The woman was struck by a Nissan Altima traveling from the south.
Four police cars, one ambulance and one fire engine arrived at the scene.
A witness, Cindy Harper, said everything happened right in front of her as she drove west on University Avenue.
“I just came to a stop because of a red light, just as this car hit a girl with a bike," Harper said. "She flew up over the hood and did a somersault over the ground, screaming and rolling.”
The victim was transported in an ambulance from the scene to University Hospital. She was released from the hospital later in the day, confirmed MU Police Department Capt. Brian Weimer.
Weimer said the victim, a student at MU, was at fault in the accident. She was ticketed for attempting to cross the intersection illegally.
Weimer said police will release the victim's name once her family has been notified.

You ever notice how many of these accidents involve female college students crossing College Ave, and not males? I'm not trying to make any sexist statements, but this seems to be the case almost every time.
I'm an avid cyclist, and I always check both ways before heading into an intersection. I hope this girl's stupid actions don't just make the rest of us look bad.

Bill, the statement you made here was overtly sexist, whether you think you meant it to be or not. Secondly, I don't know that anyone is concerned with how this accident made you or fellow cyclists look. It isn't about you. What's important to remember is that this was an ACCIDENT and luckily the victim survived. This girl is a fellow human being with a family and friends, like yourself I'm sure, and perhaps you should consider this before passing judgment.
Too many college students try to play "Frogger" across College Avenue.
Be careful boys and girls. The cars and trucks are bigger than you.
If you don't know how to be careful, you just might have to wait for a few near death experiences before a sense of mortality kicks in.
I am the boyfriend of the girl in this accident. She is safe at home with some soft tissue damage.
Let me say she was not trying to play "Frogger," she wasn't trying to beat the light, and she especially isn't a stupid girl. That sexist comment is completely unnecessary.
College students don't get sleep, especially ones with jobs. She was coming home to eat lunch before going into work, made a mistake and didn't look up at the intersection. It was a lapse of concentration, and resulted in being struck by a car going around 30mph. Please dont make assumptions about her motives or her ability to follow the law. It was an accident, she is paying for a ticket, being summoned, and having to deal with the pain of flying 15 feet through the air.
Please try not to be insensitive. Understand that humans are fallible and that this could happen to anyone. And try to realize that maybe the person you are passing judgement on is reading these comments...
I am glad she is ok. I understand people being upset in general by students that cross the street, often at a leisurely pace, with no regard to the oncoming traffic. I have often wondered what would happen if I did not brake as they clearly expect me to do. It is amazing that that is a risk they are clearly willing to take. However, there are the occasional students that look up and put pep in their step and you can tell they were zoned out. Most of the campus is a pedestrian campus so streets are of no consequence to their safety or level of alertness. I can see how it would be easy to forget to switch gears when you begin to exit the campus. I once had a motivational speaker give me a really good tip. Anytime someone does something that makes you want to judge them, make up an excuse on their behalf. Someone cuts you of on the road? "Man, they must be on their way to the hospital to meet a loved one!" It may not always be the case, but sometimes it will be and the important thing is that it will make your day better!
