PrintCOLUMBIA — Even with its convincing 51-13 win against Miami (Ohio), the Missouri football team wasn't able to make it into the AP Top 25 poll.
The Tigers are among 12 teams receiving votes. This week they had 51 votes.
Although Missouri (4-0) is on the outside looking in, Nevada isn't.
It took 62 years, but Nevada is back in The Associated Press poll. The Wolf Pack were No. 25 in the poll released Sunday and are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1991, the year before they jumped from I-AA to I-A.
"It's very exciting news," coach Chris Ault told the AP in a telephone interview Sunday. "I'm sure our players will be fired up."
The first month of the season closed with the preseason top three in the rankings unchanged: Alabama is No. 1, followed by Ohio State and Boise State.
The Crimson Tide had its toughest challenge yet Saturday, coming from behind to beat Arkansas 24-20. The road victory helped the Tide gain five first-place votes to 57.
Ohio State, which rolled to a 73-20 victory against Eastern Michigan, received two first-place votes, and Boise State, which beat Oregon State 37-24, received one.
The USA Today coaches' poll has the same top three teams. In this poll, Missouri climbed one spot to No. 23.

Wasn't there at least one article in this newspaper saying University of Missouri System professors were at or near the bottom of the salary scale for members of AAUP?
Wasn't there an article just last week saying that there may be a 10% reduction in state funding for the university?
How long has it been since lower level staff at any campus of this university received a serious pay raise?
But the Tigers not making it into the top 25 in the AP football poll is somehow important.
Ellis, much the same reaction I had to the "Do you think Missouri is a football or basketball school?" question from last week. Frankly, I didn't care when I attended (that may have been due to Woody's Wagon being hitched to Mizzou at the time) and I still don't care. I went to Mizzou to get an education, not watch sports.
What is wrong with you guys?? Are you faculty members or something? Sports are so much more important to me than the education I received at Mizzou. Don't get me wrong, I learned some things during college, but very little of it was relevant, real-world knowledge. The only important thing I got from school was a piece of paper that proves I graduated.
Considering that most of society tends to judge a school more on its athletic programs than its academic credentials, I'm extremely pleased with the state of our football program as well as the university as a whole. Do you know if Boise State is a strong school academically? I sure don't, but I do know that one of their receivers made a SICK one-handed catch last week...

Neither Schultz nor I are faculty members, at any campus. Schultz is an MU graduate; I am not.
If I needed a reason to be glad that I didn't attend MU your essay definitely provides me with one. I certainly hope you aren't typical.
PS: Boise State is not a strong academic university.
As a graduate of Mizzou's Engineering College, I'm judging the University much more critically based on the shenanigans (not shillelaghs) going on there recently instead of the sports programs.

Be glad you don't have the shillelaghs, they're heavy and very awkward to carry.
The future of this university - assuming that it has one - will not be decided on a football field or basketball court.

It's funny. When I was a student at Mizzou, and even after I graduated and was in law school, I always told my mother and father, who were teachers: "College is for academics and not sports." I think that I thought it was the cool thing to say.
There is plently going on at Mizzou, academically. Sports are fun, and football and basketball pay for all the other sports. Have fun. It's odd to slam Mizzou's alleged imbalance of funds, when you didn't even go there. I hate Harvard grads because they're smarter than me.
