TODAY'S QUESTION: Do you plan to use the atlatl this season?

Missouri has introduced a new weapon into the hunting laws. The atlatl, a long-range weapon used in ancient times to hunt mammoth and fish, was legalized for the 2010 deer season, which begins in November. The weapon was legalized for hunting small game in 2007.

Ray Madden and Missouri Atlatl Association President Ron Mertz spent the past seven years working to have the weapon legalized for hunting. Mertz argues that the atlatl expands hunting methods. He also says that people fear the weapon because they don't know much about it, so he demonstrates the atlatl frequently.

The atlatl is only legalized for the November firearms deer season, which  lasts for 11 days. However, the Department of Conservation's regulations committee would consider expanding atlatl use to archery season if the committee sees interest in the weapon.
