LETTER: Elk not wanted in Missouri

I was at the meeting in Salem, Mo., 10 years ago when the Missouri Department of Conservation was trying to reintroduce elk in Missouri. The results sound very much the same as the one held recently.
I had just hit a deer on my way home in the country. I thought, "What if it had been an elk?" A deer weighs 250-350 pounds while an adult elk will weigh about a thousand pounds. Imagine one of those coming through your wind shield.

Elk do not jump over fences, they paw them down and they carry diseases to cattle.
We in the cattle industry are very careful to keep our animals healthy; therefore, we still do not need elk in Missouri.

While elk may have roamed parts of Missouri in the past, this is NOT the past! Re-introduction of a species when conditions have changed is at best a chancy business, both for the species and for everyone else.
