PrintCOLUMBIA — One of Columbia's newest fire stations was awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for going green.
Columbia Fire Station No. 7 was given a "Silver" rating by the U.S. Green Building Council, a "nonprofit membership organization whose vision is a sustainable built environment." It received the rating for implementing energy efficiency in the building's design, according to a press release.
When surveying fire stations that may meet its standards, the council looks at whether the building was constructed using "recycled content" as well as resource efficient materials, according to the press release.
Fire Station No. 7 is located at Green Meadows and Bethel Roads.
Fire Station No. 9 was also certified with a gold rating in August.
According to the press release, the fire station is the third Columbia-owned building to be LEED certified. Once complete, City Hall will be eligible for certification as well.
