It's been almost two years since a proposal to rezone 271 acres in eastern Boone County was first filed.
Now, the Columbia City Council is set to vote on the proposal during its Monday night meeting.
If approved, the request would rezone the land into commercial and residential property and the city would annex. It's a step toward development that many residents in the area oppose.
Since then, the Planning and Zoning Commission has twice voted against the request. The recently approved East Area Plan also lays out a significantly different vision for the area than what the Richland Road development would represent.
David Atkins is the lead developer behind the project. Robert Hollis, an attorney representing the two corporations created for this rezoning effort, said late last week that a large portion of the rezoning request has been withdrawn. This tract included about 360,000 square feet of retail space along either 300 residences or 360,000 square feet of office space, according to a Missourian article.
Third Ward Councilman Gary Kespohl, whose ward would include this land if it is annexed, said a dozen residents came to his office last Wednesday with concerns about the project.
"It takes away some of the residents' concerns which is always good to try and compromise," he said of the change to the plan.
