Joplin City Council rejects smoking ban for now

JOPLIN — A divided Joplin City Council rejected a proposed smoking ban but will reconsider the issue after more study.
The council voted Monday night to reject a proposal to ban smoking in any public place or workplace, including outdoor patios. The vote came after two hours of public comment in a packed council room.

Supporters, including representatives of Joplin hospitals, say residents support the ban and cited the negative health effects of smoking.
The Joplin Globe reports that several restaurant and bar owners spoke in opposition to the ban.
The council voted to reconsider the issue next week after a work session and gathering more public information.
