COLUMBIA – Before the goal posts came down, Columbiamissourian.com had all the highlights from MU Homecoming 2010.
- 2010 marked MU's 99th Homecoming. Is MU really the birthplace of Homecoming traditions?
- MU alum Mort Walker, creator of the Beetle Bailey comic strip, visited MU Friday for the dedication of the new Student Center, which includes Mort's, a restaurant named after him. Mort's served up more than a thousand Shackburgers Friday to celebrate the occasion.
- MU fraternities and sororities put on their annual house decorations Friday as part of the festivities, which were days in the making.
- Downtown businesses prepared for a surge in weekend visitors.
- AT&T beefed up cell phone coverage in Memorial Stadium to improve fans' reception.
- Three Columbia residents with close ties to the festivities reflected on what Homecoming means to them.
- Fans showed up early Saturday morning for ESPN's 'College Gameday' broadcast. ESPN and MU officials estimated a record-setting 18,000 fans filled the quad, some made signs. A lot of work went into the show, and ESPN relied on MU facilities, students and staff for support. After the show, Missouri and Oklahoma fans showed their spirit.
- Crowds gathered Saturday afternoon to watch the annual MU Homecoming parade downtown. The start time for the parade was moved back to accommodate the 'College Gameday' broadcast.
- Oklahoma fans descended on Columbia for the big game and received a more hospitable reception than they anticipated. Sooner tailback Trey Millard, a former Rock Bridge Bruins standout, received a particularly warm welcome on his return to Columbia.
- Missouri defeated Oklahoma for the first time since 1998. Oklahoma had been ranked first in the Bowl Championship Series rankings entering the game. The game sold out, but tickets for the game were available on ticket resale sites for as much as $550 Friday.
