PrintElection day is a week away, and Missouri voters must decide which ballot issues will pass.
The local issues:
- Proposition 1, the park sales tax, would renew a one-eighth-cent sales tax that voters approved in 2000 and renewed in 2005. The tax revenue would go toward the Parks and Recreation Department's capital improvements fund.
- Proposition 2, if passed, would make the use of Tasers or any "conducted electrical device" a Class A misdemeanor. It would apply to all citizens, including the Columbia Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff's Department.
The statewide issues:
- Proposition A would amend Missouri law to set standards for earnings tax. If it passes, in St. Louis and Kansas City (the only Missouri cities with such a tax), residents would vote in April 2011 whether to continue their 1 percent taxes on income and business revenues. The amendment would also prohibit any other Missouri city from enacting an earnings tax.
- Proposition B, if passed, would regulate dog breeders and the space in which they keep their dogs. It would include tightening rules about the design of enclosures, veterinary care, dogs' breeding cycles, access to food and water and the number of animals kept for breeding, according to a previous Missourian report.

The reports showed how much money each has raised and, just as or more important, who was giving it to them. At puppy mills in Missouri, dogs are crammed into small and filthy cages, denied veterinary care, exposed to extremes of heat and cold, and given no exercise or human affection. These puppy mills are cruel and the way these dogs are treated is wrong. Prop B will stop puppy mill abuses by establishing common sense standards for the proper care of dogs.
The Humane Society of Missouri and many Missouri veterinarians urge a “YES” vote on Prop B.

It ultimately is dangerous to newborn puppies. They lowered the range of temperatures that will cause harm. The mandate of cleaning a solid floor only once daily is totally lacking any common sense. Would you only change a diaper on a baby once daily? The open door unfettered access puts newborn pups at risk for delivery in frigid temps should a female become nervous/confused and happen to wander out in the cold. It does happen. 50 dog cap will financially break those kennels that have built new terrific kennels or have remodeled. Many are based on 100 dogs and these are family operations where Husband/wife & children work in the kennel and it is their sole income. I have several in this boat. HSUS is a non profit. No studies were performed in this state and no Missouri kennel vets were consulted. Missouri Veterinary Medical Association condemns this as do many organizations including 100's of vets. HSUS is in hot water with many of us as Barbara Schmitz attempted to discredit our colleague in a debate aired on radio. She fabricated an untrue story. Listen and learn.
