PrintHopes were high in Tigers country. After beating then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma, Missouri was firmly in the conversation of national championship contenders. Two losses later, not so much.
Now the Tigers' goal is to win 10 games this season. If they do win three of their final four games (including a bowl game), the 2010 Tigers would be only the fourth team in Missouri history to have double-digit wins, the others being the 11-0 1960 team, the 2007 team and the 2008 team.
The 2008 season, despite the team winning 10 games, was a disappointment for the Tigers and their fans. After the unbelievable 2007 season that saw the Tigers achieve a No. 1 ranking and go on to win the Cotton Bowl, preseason expectations were high for Chase Daniel and the Tigers. Four losses were not expected in Columbia, and the Tigers finished with a 10-4 record.
Expectations were high this season as well. Gary Pinkel was able to beat Oklahoma for the first time, so why couldn't a few other firsts fall? A Big 12 championship? A national championship?
In hindsight, those goals might have been lofty for the team, even after a big win. But they were the possibilities being tossed around by the reporters, fans and players nonetheless. Those goals were not set in the preseason, but on the fly.
So, with two straight losses, are you disappointed in the Missouri Tigers' performance this season?
