MU freshman injured in dorm fall

COLUMBIA — A 19-year-old freshman has been hospitalized after falling from a dorm balcony at MU.
Richard Mehan was taken to a hospital early Saturday after he fell from a fifth-floor balcony onto a fourth-floor commons area at Laws residential hall. The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that he was listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon.
MU Police Capt. Brian Weimer said the student had been hanging onto the outside of a railing when his hands apparently slipped. Police responded about 2 a.m.

Mistake No. 1: PRETENDING your campus is actually dry, just because you've announced that it is.
Elsewhere in this "system" we KNOW our campuses aren't really "dry," although they're supposed to be. We also know we don't have enough cops to police everyone, and if the students themselves don't "police" these situations, this is what will continue to happen.
Some years ago we lost a student to alcohol poisoning. He didn't fall down or off anything, but there were students on hand who knew he was in trouble and did nothing. Think about that.
