Saturday marked the first day of an expanded deer season. During this time, hunters can use any legal method tokill a deer.
More than 1,800 does, button bucks and antlered bucks had been killed in Boone County by Monday morning.
Share the Harvest is a program that lets hunters donate some of this meat to needy families throughout the state, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. A total of 2.1 million pounds of venison have been donated since the program began in 1992, according to a previous Missourian report.
To donate, hunters drop off a deer at an approved processing plant and ask that the butchers set aside either a few pounds or the entire animal. Here's a list of processors in Boone County.
- Crane's Meat Processing, Ashland, 657-2501
- KP Processing, Harrisburg, 881-2690
- Tunes's Locker Plant, Centralia, 682-2517
- Wolf Deer Processing, Centralia, 682-1507

If I hit a deer with my sedan before 2011 I'll be happy to share the meat!
I plan to share the meat with those who will be introducing ELK, a significantly larger animal, to the woods and highways of southern Missouri.
You don't mind a little hair attached to your venison steaks, do you?
