PrintCOLUMBIA — Retailers are preparing for one of their biggest days of the year: Black Friday.
Many consider the day after Thanksgiving to be the official start to the holiday shopping season, which prompts stores all over the country to open in the wee hours of the morning and sell their merchandise at sale prices.
The shopping day can get violent, however. In 2008 the stampede of customers awaiting Walmart's opening in Long Island, N.Y., trampled one worker to death when the doors opened. In that same year, two men shot each other to death in a Toys R Us in Palm Desert, Calif., after the women they were with got into a fist fight.
And people have already begun lining up. A couple in St. Petersburg, Fla., have been in line for Best Buy since Nov. 17, hoping to be the first to get into the store.
