Wright's clutch shot helps Georgetown beat Missouri in overtime

KANSAS CITY — With the clock expiring in regulation, Georgetown’s Chris Wright made the shot that sank the Missouri men's basketball team.

After Wright missed a potential game-tying shot, Georgetown’s chances of tying the game seemed slim. But after an offensive rebound by Jason Clark, one of 36 total rebounds for the Hoyas compared to Missouri’s 25, Wright got another chance. Clark passed the ball back to Wright for a chance to redeem himself, and with Missouri defender Michael Dixon’s hand right in his face, Wright put up a desperation shot from beyond the arc. With 0.03 showing on the game clock, the ball fell through the net, and the game went into overtime.

Wright took a quick look at the small Georgetown fan section at the Sprint Center, flexed his arms and was embraced by a group of teammates.

“They had some guys right up on me, it was a tough shot.” Wright said.

Wright said he was comfortable with any of his teammates taking the shot, but he felt that it was his opportunity to shine. Asked if he had ever made a bigger shot than that one, Wright didn't pause. “No,” he said.

After Wright's shot to end regulation, No. 16 Georgetown dominated No. 9 Missouri in overtime and won 111-102 on Tuesday night at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Wright finished with 21 points, four of those coming in overtime on free throws, which essentially sealed the game for the Hoyas. Georgetown made every one of its free throws in the game, half of them with Wright at the line.

After Georgetown claimed an big early lead over Missouri (the Hoyas led by as much as 18 just 10 minutes into the game), Missouri was able to slow down Wright, and the team’s leading scorer, Austin Freeman. The Tigers came back to move ahead by as much as a five points with 4:26 remaining, but they let the lead slip away.

“They’re tough,” Georgetown coach John Thompson said. “They’re physical like a Big East team. There very similar to teams in our conference in that they can hurt you both offensively and defensively. More specifically, the motion that they use is really similar to some teams that we’ll see.”

As Wright walked back into the tunnel after postgame interviews, several Georgetown fans came down to give him a hug. After that, all he could do was simply slam his hands together in a loud clap and scream “Whoo!”
